Steal Art, Go Straight to Jail?
Alec Monopoly is a famous street artist from New York City who is best known for his depictions of "Mr. Monopoly" (true name Rich Uncle Pennybags!). He's also known for never showing his entire face--and his ability to market merch as well as his art.
On May 21, 2020, Monopoly's white Range Rover was stolen from a Miami driveway. Inside the locked vehicle were four of his paintings, worth what he estimated to be hundreds of thousands of dollars. Monopoly told the media that it was entirely possible that the Range Rover--and not the art--was the target of the thieves. Regardless, it was a major loss for the artist. "It's very valuable work, very personal work for me," Monopoly said. "It's very sad because I put so many hours, years, months of my life into my artwork and for it be stolen is like a piece of me being stolen."
Monopoly is taking an active role in the investigation, offering a personal reward of $15,000 for the return of the vehicle and art, or for the arrest of the culprits.
